Pastor Jane Bishop

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.”
Phillipians 4:8

Pastor Jane Harlan

Jane was 17 years old when she felt called to serve God and direct the Junior High Ministry at Preakness. It was because of the importance of her own active youth group in high school, she eagerly accepted. As a volunteer for almost 10 years, her ministry grew to eventually include Senior High Ministry and Children's Ministry. Jane devoted many of her weekends helping young people grow in their relationship with each other and especially Jesus Christ while working full time in the banking field.
After her son Justin was born in 1981, God called her to join the staff of Preakness Baptist part time and continue her work with the children and youth. During the next 10 years, Jane became very involved with programs through Group Publishing in Loveland, Colorado, which enabled her to become more equipped to teach children and young people the importance of becoming actively involved in their Christian walk. At the same time, Jane became certified in Junior and Senior High Ministry and as an Advanced Speaker for Group.

In 1991, after several months of prayer, Jane took a full time position as an Associate Pastor for Van Riper in Fair Lawn. There her responsibilities grew to include various other aspects of ministry with an emphasis on children and youth ministry and a summer fun camp.

Four years later, the Lord called Jane back to Preakness Baptist Church where she serves to this day. It was her joy to serve for almost 10 years with Pastor Herbert Dorfman, followed by serving as Co-Pastor with Pastor David Boone for 5 l/2 years until December, 2010.

Although Jane's passion will always be working with the children and youth of our world, in January, 2011 she began a new phase of her ministry, serving as the full time Pastor of Preakness Baptist Church and shepherding a wonderful church family who loves the Lord and serves from their hearts. Jane was officially installed on December 11, 2011, as the Sanctuary Choir presented the cantata "A Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas" and her family and church family were present.

Jane lives in Wayne with her husband John.  Together they are blessed with 8 children and 6 spouses, 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

In December 2007, she continued her work as music director of the Christmas Cantata "Imagine," and then as music director of the sanctuary choir. Although her previous experience has been primarily music education and theater, Karen found a new love of gospel music and spreading His word through song, thanks to the warm and wonderful ministry of Pastor Jane Harlan, Pastor David Boone, and the PBC community. She continues to serve as choir director for the PBC Sanctuary Choir as well as music director for the Christmas and Easter Cantatas.

... But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.
Joshua 24:15

Pastor Jane HarlanMy journey with the Lord has been from birth. Growing up in a Baptist home gave me an excellent start. Foundations of faith were developed early while attending Sunday school and church regularly. Youth fellowship was a must in my household and my friendships from there have been lifelong.
During my teens, I began understanding the values of serving my Lord, and giving back to others became a part of me. Understanding peoples needs, wants, hurts and desires became evident and I acted upon them.

My formal profession as a teacher guided me while working with children of all ages and backgrounds when living in the Philadelphia area. helping underprivileged kids was my summer experience.

Moving to New Jersey strengthened my abilities and led me to Preakness Baptist Church, where I began working with children.

My next calling was to represent our church tot he Newark Baptist Home for the Aged, where I became very involved. At that time, I was also asked to assist with the Senior congregation at Preakness. Many years later, I am still enjoying our "Young at Hearts", planning programs and ministering to their needs.

I know the Lord has had a special hand in directing me through my life. With His continued help, He will keep showing me the way to serve Him. Slowing down is not in my vocabulary. The best might be yet to come!
